Discovering the Fascinating World of Fascia in Chiropractic Care

It was across the large, bright white dissection lab that I first heard the word "fascia" spoken by my professor, a Soviet-era doctor soon to be head of the anatomy department. Hearing this word was an epiphany for me. How could I have progressed through years of anatomy education without understanding it? After spending so much time ignoring the tissues surrounding the important muscles and organs, I realized that fascia was a missing link in my understanding of the human body. I had to know everything the curriculum didn’t cover.
The Fascinating World of Fascia
I approached Dr. Myroslava Kumka, and she graciously agreed to guide me on this journey into the world of fascia. I now had a faculty supervisor for an investigation that would take years to complete, leading me to places I had never dreamed of. Dr. Kumka spent countless hours with me in her office, exploring the evolving field of fascia research.
There had recently been an international congress at Harvard University, and we eagerly absorbed the exciting information presented there, including revelations about fascia's innervation. With her support, I dove deep into this rabbit hole, exploring disciplines ranging from biomechanics to immunology, histology, and surgery. As a chiropractic student, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information. My goal was to organize and condense this knowledge to share with others.
What I discovered was that fascia was not only under-discussed but also that we were using inconsistent language when communicating about it internationally. It seemed to me that fascia was "the" organ system that had yet to be properly mapped out. I proposed that different regions of fascia could be grouped and catalogued better. Instrument-assisted soft tissue techniques help gently alleviate tension.
Surgical stainless steel tools are a modern advancement over ancient Gua Sha tools, allowing us to break down chronic scar tissue adhesions more effectively. As I scrape, I visualize breaking collagen fibrils microscopically, stimulating fibroblasts and myofibroblasts to replace and remodel the tissue into a stronger form. The goal is to align the haphazard mess of scar tissue into a more organized structure. Active rehabilitation that tensions the tissue in the desired direction can utilize eccentrics, allowing myofibroblasts to assist in recovery.
